Dragon Ball Z Kai Part Seven Review

Of course I bought part seven yesterday. Why wouldn't I? But does part seven deliver well?

Recently, with the cancellation of the level sets and the music scandal, it seems Funimation is becoming lazier and lazier with DBZ. Who can blame them? They've been milking the series for ten years now sooner or later, they had to be running out with material. What with the Orange Bricks, Dragon Boxes, Level Sets (not really) and Kai, where can they go?

Anyway, part Seven delivers just like part five and six. Remastered art, new and refurbished veteran voices, and the unfortunate Kikuchi score, which is inferior to Yamamoto's.

Speaking of voices, they are actually surprisingly improved from the previous parts. Every voice actor provides a brilliant role in each character's tone, attitude, and personality. Although I think Chris Ayres's voice for Frieza is the best improvement to the show, veteran VA Dameon Clarke, has surprised me with his voice for Perfect Cell. Now Clarke has been voicing Cell for as long as I can remember, but he truly brings the Kai in DBZ. Not only is his voice perfect in tone, but his voice is actually intimidating. He actually makes you feel afraid for Gohan, like you know Cell will kick some ass.

Overall the script shows more fluid speech in each character, which is a stark contrast to the mucky script in the 90's. Also, Kai is a lot more contemporary such as,

"Poor Mr. Popo, up there all alone with no internet connection" (Goku to King Kai).

The artwork is...well...
It sucks.

Like I said Funimation is getting really lazy and rushed with this series. Although the voices are amazing, it isn't what Kai used to be. There is no longer any vibrant and exciting music to go in the background, only what seems to be music that is out of place.Yamamoto composed brilliant orchestrated music. The current score sounds too computer generated. And the colors seemed to be lacking pizazz and feeling that was present in the previous parts.

I don't know if you can see it, but part one shows some serious improvement with the tone of the animation, while part seven looks like it had no improvement. Is Funimation even trying anymore?

The Packaging sucks it's very close to the same color as part four, but only a little darker. The DVDs have that stupid recycling symbol inside the cases and combined with the Grey text on a dark purple background the episode descriptions are impossible to read.

I don't know anymore.I'll buy part eight when it comes out to complete my collection, and I'll buy the Orange Bricks for nostalgia, but whatever new DBZ thing is released in the future, I think I'll stay away from.

What are your thoughts?
